6 days (an unexpected gift)

December 19, 2016

music has this unexpected gift. this unexplainable ability to give and receive. at the same time. to heal. and to calm. to excite. to share intimately in the most unintimate of spaces. to take you somewhere you are currently not. and to give light where there seems to be none.  a woman came up to me. last night. after our final performance of this simple. intimate. Messiah. with tears in her eyes. and said, “this has been such a hard, hard few days for me. but this performance has been a gift and a bright light in a very dark week. it seems to have made everything ok again.” and this. here. is the unexpected gift. of music. when what you’re sharing gives more than you could ever possibly imagine. and in turn, how one receives your gift, is a gift back to you. full circle. through composed. continuous. i sometimes joke. in the middle of a rough rehearsal. it’s ok, people, we aren’t saving lives. and we aren’t. but every once in a while. it turns out. we do get to heal them. others. even our own. and what greater gift, to give or to receive, than that. 6 days and counting…

On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me:
Seven Swans a Swimming
Six Geese a Laying
Five Golden Rings
Four Calling Birds
Three French Hens
Two Turtle Doves
and an Anna Lee Fiorino Tutorial Video!

my blowdrys have been messy and sloppy lately, so I wanted to go back to my hair guru, Anna Lee, to remind myself how to do it right.  obsessed with how detailed this video is. i want my hair to be shiny and bright this season too! 7 days and counting!…

p.s. i’m totally the crazy person with all the brushes in the hair. eep.

we’ve never really been a mashed potato family. we have pilaf. instead. cause we’re armenian. and that’s what armenians do. but we decided to add mashed potatoes into the mix for all our holidays this year. and holy creamy amazingness! this is the recipe to make! i made them the day before thanksgiving. wrapped them super tight in saran wrap. and then baked them the next day (with lots of pats of butter on top.eep!). so major plus for being able to make ahead of time. here’s the recipe. enjoy. thank me later. merry eating. 8 days and counting!…

Ree Drummond’s Mashed Potatoes

~ 2 sticks butter, softened, plus more for pan (i maybe used a little more!)
~ 5 pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes (i used the gold, because…gold!)
~ one 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
~ 1 cup heavy cream (i maybe used a little more!)
~ 1/2 to 1 teaspoon seasoned salt (i didn’t have this, so didn’t add)
~ 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
~ 1 teaspoon black pepper

~Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

~ Generously butter a 4-quart baking dish.

~ Peel and cut the potatoes into chunks.

~ Bring a large pot of water to a simmer and add the potatoes.

~ Bring to a boil and cook until fork tender, 20 to 25 minutes.

~ Drain the potatoes in a large colander. Place them back into the dry pot and put the pot on the stove.

~Mash the potatoes over low heat, allowing all the steam to escape before adding in all the other ingredients. (my mom bought me this fancy oxo potato ricer, so I used that. then stirred with a spoon till steam was mostly gone. took about 5-10 minutes.)

~ Turn off the heat and add 1 1/2 sticks butter, the cream cheese, heavy cream, seasoned salt, kosher salt and pepper. Mash to combine (I used electric mixer).

~ Spread the potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Throw pats of the remaining butter over the top of the potatoes and bake until the butter is melted and the potatoes are warmed through, 20 to 30 minutes.

~ Try not to eat whole dish in one sitting!

so sosie might be what one would call spoiled. i like to think that she’s just really really loved. and on christmas day that love is shown with the mount everest of presents for her marmi (grandma). i had a feeling her tiny present from auntie would get lost in the shuffle. so i decided that once a week, for the month before christmas, i would hide a little treat in her house. and she’d have to go on a scavenger hunt to find it. 2 hidden treats down, one to go! 10 days and counting!..

her ornament surprise!

the hunt!

found it!
