just 2 sleeps till Christmas!  one of my favorite things is cozying up by the fireplace. with the lights dim. and my mom’s beautiful mantel all aglow. the few days before christmas are super super hectic. so i look forward to christmas night. when the wonderful chaos turns into stillness. and my parents and siblings and niece tuck in next to the fire, and recall all the funny little moments from the day. i love the whirlwind of family and presents and food and laughter. but this is always my favorite part of the day. what simple traditions are you looking forward to? 2 days and counting!…

the thing about the frills & trills advent situation is that there have been a lot of pics of my face. like a lot. day after day. and it’s too much. i was going to post another one today. and I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. enough. basta. fini. this is why we don’t usually ‘frills & trills’ 25 days in a row. too much of the face. remember when anne hathaway won her oscar. and everyone was annoyed. not because we really cared whether or not she deserved it. but just because we were so unbelievably sick of seeing her face. everywhere. smiling. and being grossly happy all the time. yeah. well. i think we’ve hit that point. so i’ve replaced my face with tim riggins, #33. cause what better gift is there than tim riggins, #33. (if you don’t know, google it). you’re welcome. now time to go figure out how we’re gonna fit (and feed) 30 people in our bitty living room not meant for 30 people. eep! if you miss my face today. you can picture it looking like the clenched-teeth emoji. 3 days and counting!…

these. cookies. always. how have I not shared these here before?? i thought i had. for sure. till a friend was recipe hunting for them on F&T. and found “no results.” eep. well. the results are in. and these are the best chocolate chip cookies. ever. besides yours. i’m sure yours are lovely too. email me the recipe. please. bake. eat. rinse. repeat. 5 days and counting!…

The-Take-Out-Of-The-Oven-Before-Fully-Baked Chocolate Chip Cookies:

  • 1 lb. softened butter (unsalted..but salted will work too )
  • 2 cups brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 2 TSBP vanilla extract
  • 3 eggs
  • 6 cups flour
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 1.5  tsp baking soda
  • 4 cups chocolate chips (or however much your heart desires)
  • chopped walnuts (optional)

  • preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • cream together butter & brown sugar with electric mixer
  • mix in sugar, vanilla extract, & eggs till fully combined
  • mix in salt, baking soda, &  flour (one cup at a time…i recommend measuring out the flour before adding, or else it’s super easy to lose track)
  • mix in chocolate chips and walnuts by hand
  • spoon out TBSP size scoops onto silpat covered cookie sheets. they will spread when baking. so leave room for them to expand.
  • bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes, depending on oven (they won’t look done when you take them out. but they’ll set & firm up after about 5-10 minutes outside the oven. the more you bake them, the less moist and the more crisp they will become. they’ll still taste great this way, if you prefer this)
  • enjoy!

the perfect homemade gift

6 days (an unexpected gift)

December 19, 2016

music has this unexpected gift. this unexplainable ability to give and receive. at the same time. to heal. and to calm. to excite. to share intimately in the most unintimate of spaces. to take you somewhere you are currently not. and to give light where there seems to be none.  a woman came up to me. last night. after our final performance of this simple. intimate. Messiah. with tears in her eyes. and said, “this has been such a hard, hard few days for me. but this performance has been a gift and a bright light in a very dark week. it seems to have made everything ok again.” and this. here. is the unexpected gift. of music. when what you’re sharing gives more than you could ever possibly imagine. and in turn, how one receives your gift, is a gift back to you. full circle. through composed. continuous. i sometimes joke. in the middle of a rough rehearsal. it’s ok, people, we aren’t saving lives. and we aren’t. but every once in a while. it turns out. we do get to heal them. others. even our own. and what greater gift, to give or to receive, than that. 6 days and counting…
